Khórta - Fresh & Zesty Grecian Herbs
Khórta

When Greeks talk about khórta, they actually mean grass or hay. But when they order khórta salad in a restaurant, they expect something else. In Greece, the term khórta also covers a number of wild herbs, which can be picked in the meadows or by the roadside and used in salads, after a brief blanching. They have an unusually spicy taste, contain a lot of bitter substances, and greatly enrich the already copious selection of salads. Species vary from region to region, but there are also different names for the same species. The term khórta includes dandelions, stringing nettles, wild radish, sorrel, ribwort, and other wild plants. No laws restrict the gathering of these wild herbs, and locals are free to pick as many as they like.

Community Event: Athens Sister City Shuffle: Run for ‘The Runners’ – August 21, 2008
Thursday, Aug. 21 - CHICAGO
7 pm in Greektown West Loop
Registration will begin at 5 pm
Block Party: 7-10:30 pm

The Athens Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International is hosting a 5k run, "Athens Sister City Shuffle: Run for 'The Runners' 2008." The race kicks-off Chicago's Taste of Greece, and supports the fundraising efforts for “The Runner” sculpture by artist Theodoros Papayiannis, to be placed at O’Hare International Airport.

"The Runners" sculpture features five runners emerging from antiquity to meet the present, and will be located at O'Hare International Airport, along the I-190 south side embankment, west of Bessie Coleman Drive. The Runners will serve as a tie between Athens and Chicago, but also as a landmark within the city.

Complete race and sponsorship information is available at: www.sistercityshuffle.org

  Featured Destination: Chalki

GEOGRAPHY: The small island of Chalki, to the west of Rhodes, has recently been declared an international meeting place for the world's Youth Movements. It is just 28 sq. km. in area, has 34 km. of coastline, a population of 334 and is 302 nautical miles from Piraeus. There is a boat from Piraeus, via the outlying islands, linking it also with Amorgos, Pholegandros, Melos, Santorini, Anaphi, the rest of the Dodecanese, Crete, the islands of the north and east Aegean, and Kavala. A local service links it with Carpathos, Kasos and Rhodes and in the summer there is a hydrofoil service from Rhodes (harbor and Kameiros) once a week. The island's capital is Chalki (Nimborio). A mountainous island (highest peak Maistros, 593 m. a.s.l.) with no provision for tourists, it is fine for those wanting a true taste of island life with only basic amenities.

HISTORY: Chalki was inhabited in ancient times, and seems to have been named after the copper mines there. Excavations have shown that it experienced a period of acme in antiquity (10th - 5th century BC) but later sunk into oblivion. In the 13th century it was captured by the Venetians. Its recent history is much the same as that of the other islands of the Dodecanese and it became part of the Greek state in 1948.

SIGHTS-MONUMENTS: The island's capital and port, Nimborio, was built amphitheatrically on its southeast side on the creek of the bay of Nimborio. The former capital, Chora, nowadays deserted, was in the island's hinterland in order to escape the menace of pirates. There are many abandoned houses at Chora which, in its hey-day, was a thriving community of some 4,000. The ruined medieval castle still stands, built on the site of the ancient acropolis, as does the church of St. Nicholas with its significant wall-paintings. Other places of interest on the island include the monasteries, of the Taxiarch Michael, of St. John, the Holy Trinity and the Holy Cross. One can reach the beaches on both the north and south coast of the island by caique or by walking from Nimborio. There are good fishing grounds between Chalki and the islets of Alimia and Erimonisa.

Accommodation is available in three pensions and a few rooms to let. There is no refuelling station for yachts. The nearby islet of Alimia can be reached by caique from Chalki or excursion craft from Rhodes. The fishing is excellent and visitors can stay in the small hospice in the monastery of St. George. The handful of houses belong to farmers from Chalki.
